SARACEN WARRIOR, 13TH CENTURY

The word "Saracen," meaning "desert dweller," is attributed to the Muslim warriors who proved their worth by battling Christianity for over 700 years. The Umayyads, one of the three caliphates established in Europe, established their headquarters in Córdoba. The struggle for Christianity finally succeeded in expelling Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula in 1609 during the reign of Philip III.
