Hans-Joachim Marseille was born in Berlin in 1919. A rebel by nature and possessing strong moral convictions, he never joined the Nazi Party and did not support the war, but he knew he had to fulfill his duty to his country.
In three years on the African front, he scored 158 kills, becoming a national idol: "The Star of Africa." His fame was exploited by the Ministry of Propaganda.
He received numerous decorations and in 1942 became the youngest captain in the Luftwaffe.
He was never shot down in combat, dying in 1942 in a fatal accident on a routine flight.
